Zero percent revenue share annually on your first million dollars in the Shopify Theme Store

We announced at Unite 2021 that we’re changing our revenue share model for our Partner Ecosystem.

As of September 15th at 1PM ET, we’re offering zero percent revenue share on the first million dollars you make annually on the Shopify Theme Store.

That means that if you make less than $1 million USD in the Shopify Theme Store, you will pay zero percent revenue share—and those numbers reset every year. When you make more than $1 million USD, you’ll only pay a 15 percent revenue share on the incremental earnings, reduced from the previous 20 percent. Theme developers who successfully submit a theme to the Shopify Theme Store are automatically enrolled, and there is no registration fee.

The Shopify Theme Store reopened this summer to allow new theme submissions, and new themes compatible with the Online Store 2.0 requirements have begun publishing to the theme store!

The Shopify Theme Store, combined with Online Store 2.0, offers developers the opportunity to make an impact in a relatively untapped marketplace, creating powerful, high-performing themes that help millions of Shopify merchants all over the world express their brand and market their products.

There has never been a better time to build themes for Shopify!

Theme developers new to Shopify can join the Shopify Partner Program and get started building beautiful new OS 2.0 themes for merchants.

Checkout links now powered by Shop Pay

We have updated checkout links with Shop Pay to let your merchants easily share their products with customers and send them directly to the Shop Pay checkout—the fastest, highest converting checkout experience online.

Checkout links can be added to email marketing campaigns, social posts, direct messages, SMS, and more. This also opens the door for merchants with headless commerce sites to take advantage of Shop Pay, for the first time!

Shop Pay’s one-tap checkout securely uses customers’ existing billing and shipping info, so they spend more time filling carts, not forms. Customers without Shop Pay can check out as guests.

To take advantage of this feature, merchants must have Shopify Payments activated as their primary payment gateway and enable Shop Pay in their payment settings.

Upgrade to the Fulfillment Orders API

In January 2020, we launched the Fulfillment Orders API. This API models the end-to-end fulfillment process into its sub-pieces, so fulfillment data can sync more accurately between Shopify and an order management app or a fulfillment service (3PL). This API represents the future of fulfilment with Shopify.

Shop Pay Installments launched for general availability in the US

On June 10, 2021, Shop Pay Installments launched for general availability to merchants in the US. We will be activating Shop Pay Installments for all eligible US merchants unless they have chosen to opt out starting on August 27, 2021, and are running a promotional rate until October 15, 2021.

Shop Pay Installments is a buy now, pay later solution designed specifically for the needs of Shopify merchants. Exclusively powered by Affirm in the US, it allows merchants to give their consumers the flexibility to split their purchases into four equal installments payments, interest-free and with no additional fees.

Shop Pay Installments is fully integrated into Shop Pay, the fastest and best-converting checkout option for merchants. Shop Pay Installments has been proven to boost sales: one in four merchants using it saw 50 percent higher average order value compared to other payment methods. In addition, merchants saw 28 percent fewer abandoned carts through Shop Pay Installments after switching from a third-party buy now, pay later solution.

Zero percent revenue share annually on your first million dollars in the Shopify App Store

As of August 1, 2021, we’re offering zero percent revenue share on the first million dollars you make annually on the Shopify App Store.

That means that if you make less than $1 million USD per year in the Shopify App Store, you can register to no longer pay revenue share. And every year, those numbers reset. When you earn more than $1 million USD, you’ll pay a 15 percent revenue share, which is lower than the previous 20 percent revenue share.

This change means more money in your pocket: money to invest in your business, grow your resources, and build more solutions for Shopify merchants. It’s our way of showing how serious we are about supporting developers.

We’ll also be introducing a one-time registration fee for all developers who sign up after August 1, which will be paid when they submit their first app to be reviewed. All the more reason to sign up and start building your app today!

Starting August 1 at 1pm EST, you’ll be able to register directly in your Partner Dashboard for this new revenue share. Learn more in our documentation.

Announcing Online Store 2.0

At Shopify Unite, we announced an end-to-end overhaul of how themes are built at Shopify, with the release of Online Store 2.0. With sections on every page, moveable and app-powered blocks, better metafields, and a suite of new developer tools, Online Store 2.0 marks a new world for developers and a complete rebuild of how merchants interact with the online store.

Online Store 2.0 is designed to accelerate and improve theme development at Shopify. Not only is it easier for merchants to add customizations without touching code, but apps can be injected without editing theme code and metafields are no longer only accessed via APIs or hard-coded into themes.

VAT changes for ecommerce purchases made within the EU
