Quality, Not Quantity


You may have heard that the more links you have, the better your search engine results (SERPs) are. That’s only true when talking about high-quality links that make sense to your page. It’s pretty easy to provide a host of spam-ridden links, but that will devastate your page rankings. This isn’t purely a numbers game.

Good links should have SEO qualities that complement your site. For example, you should only be using links that make sense to your own site. A pet store that vehemently links to everything from guitars to plantation tours in Louisiana isn’t going to get far. It’s always best to have fewer quality links than a slew of bad ones. 


Types of Links


There are two primary types of links, internal and external. Internal links are ones that you provide on your site. For example, you might link to a Wikipedia article about a certain service or product you offer. This will take visitors away from your site, and should only be used very sparingly (if at all). You might think you’re being helpful, and the link might be high quality, but you’re driving visitors away. 

External links are links that bring visitors to your site. You don’t have much control over these links. However, if you’re involved in a link exchange, you can regain a little control. Make sure you only exchange links with quality sites that are complementary to your own. Otherwise, it might read as spam and your rank will take a hit.


Know Your Backlinks


There are multiple types of backlinks, and some are more desirable than others. An exact match anchor text completely matches what your potential visitors might be typing in, such as “jewelry stores in Boston.” A partial match anchor text might be “Boston jewelers.” A URL link is self-explanatory and lists your website as a URL. 

There are also image backlinks and unrelated backlinks. Some say that it doesn’t really matter how visitors get to your site as long as they get there. However, working on quality links will up the number of people who do get there. The more people who visit (and wanted to get there), the higher your rankings will be. 


Links as an SEO Foundation


SEO is an integral part of your web presence, and no site should be designed without SEO in mind. However, how links work with SEO is more flexible than other elements (such as writing a daily blog with organic, naturally placed SEO words). Just because a link was a good, high-quality fit in the beginning doesn’t mean it’s kept that same integrity. Properly using links requires checking them and updating them as needed. 

There are many aspects of SEO that a non-pro can utilize, but links are a little trickier. It’s best to consult with an expert to ensure you get the kind of rankings you deserve. Otherwise, you might get stuck with sub-par links that do more harm than good.

4. Pancake

This app is stacked with features (see what I did there?) like online invoicing, PayPal integration, and establishing recurring invoices. Pancake also comes with a time tracking tool so that you can deliver detailed time sheets to clients if they request them. You can also use Pancake as a project management tool and send out amazing proposals or estimates to prospectives.

Unlike most other invoicing tools, you pay a one time fee of $179 and Pancake is yours to use and modify to be whenever you want or need.

5. Billiving

With Billiving you can quickly create invoices, estimates, and purchase orders. You can also convert estimates into invoices painlessly. This tool also lets you generate invoices in multiple languages, schedule recurring invoices, send out bulk emails, and accept payments via PayPal or Authorize.net. Other features include to track your inventory and set-up subdomains so that you can have your own eCommerce shop.

There is a free option, but for access to more features, monthly plans range between $5 to $10.

Have you wondered what’s holding you back from becoming more successful? It could be because you have the following 10 bad habits.

1. Neglecting your health.

No doubt you’ve read articles discussing the importance of healthy habits, like exercising and eating a well-balanced diet. The reason? Because living a healthy helps control your weight, improves your mood, boosts your energy, fights diseases and health conditions, and improves your sleep. These can all impact your work performance because if you’re constantly sick, fatigued, or stressed-out, then how do you expect to be a productive individual?

Besides the reasons listed above, being fit as some unexpected perks as well. “In fitness, much like in business, there are pushes for personal achievement that often make you goal-oriented. There’s also a quest to push yourself to the limit—you come to understand what’s possible and what isn’t,” says Duncan Simpson, Ph.D., a Florida-based sports psychologist.

Even if you eat healthy and exercise frequently, you also need to consider how long you’re sitting behind your computer all-day. As entrepreneur Murray Newlands points out, when we sit, we put a lot of “strain on the lower back, shoulders and neck, which “also reduces blood flow to the brain and lungs.” Make sure that you stretch your back and shoulders every 20 to 30 minutes and adopt a yoga or pilates routine.

2. Trying to be perfect.

No one is perfect. And when you're constantly trying to prove otherwise, you can become anxious and exhausted. Most detrimental, being a perfectionist prevents you from starting a project in the first place - whether if it’s writing a blog post or developing a new product. When that happens you can’t achieve your goals, meet deadlines, or grow personally or professionally.

As former Yankees great Derek Jeter said, “I’m not perfect; no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. I think you try to learn from those mistakes.”

3. Always getting distracted.

Freelancers and those working from home deal with this on a daily basis. For me personally, I can’t focus on work if there is a pile of dirty dishes. And, I can’t tell you how many times people want me to go out for lunch or help them with a project because they think I can drop whatever I’m doing at any moment. And, that’s not even getting into emails, phone calls, writing and taking care of my family.

That’s not saying that those working in an office have it any easier. Again, viewing every email that arrives, grabbing a snack, and having colleagues pop-in can also be main sources of distractions.

After a while, those constant distractions add-up and prevent you from doing whatever it is that needs to get down.

To cut back on distractions, use tools like RescueTime or Time Tracking so that you track your time and block distracting websites. Other ways to reduce your distractions are to put your phone on airplane mood, respond to your emails at dedicated times, and place a ‘Do Not Disturb’ or stop light on your office door. And, learn how to politely say ‘No’ if you don’t have the time to chat or start another project while finishing what you already started.

4. Overspending.

How does being in debt prevent you from becoming successful? For starters, constantly worrying about paying bills can have serious health consequences and distract you from completing the task at hand. It can also damage your credit score which means that when it’s time to ask for a loan to help your business grow, you’ll be denied.

As an added bonus, when you learn to create a budget and set financial goals, you can put those skills to work in keeping your business lean, along with knowing what you can and can’t do - just like with exercising.

5. Multitasking.

The human brain isn’t designed to multitask. As powerful as the brain is, it’s just not wired that way. In fact, researchers at Stanford University that those “who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information do not pay attention, control their memory or switch from one job to another as well as those who prefer to complete one task at a time.”

Even more disturbing? Multitasking can lower your IQ and can decrease your productivity by 40%.

In short, do one thing at a time.

6. Not starting what you finished.

As an entrepreneur, I always keep an eye open for new opportunities. But, there’s a balance between noticing potential opportunities and seeing a project through until the end. For example, when I travel, I may think about how to make traveling easier -  and you may be doing the same thing, especially if you’re a parent. I mean even do some quick research while waiting to board my flight for any possible investment opportunities. But, I’m not going to launch a new business while still growing my current business.

Just like the advice I gave for multitasking, do one thing at a time instead of bouncing all over the place.

7. Ignoring criticism.

While being confident and having a healthy ego can be beneficial, you also have to realize that your talent, products, or services aren’t the greatest in the world. You can’t ignore or get offended whenever you hear constructive criticism from your inner circle, employees, or customers. As well, you can't ignore or get offended whenever you hear non-constructive criticism either. You need to deal with it. It’s one of the best ways to learn what you’re doing right and what you need to work-on.

8. Making excuses.

We all make mistakes. Whether it’s because you're too busy to workout or putting off your new website design because you can’t find a good enough designer, we use excuses to justify our actions and failures. The thing is, you have to hold yourself accountable for your actions. In the end, it’s nobody else’s fault why you aren’t exercising or why your business failed. You either didn’t make the effort or you listened, concentrated and worked on the wrong problems that your business was experiencing.

9. Starting with the small stuff.

“We all like the idea of a quick victory. But does that victory mean anything if you haven’t advanced your cause?,” asks Miranda Marquit.

Instead of starting your day with easier tasks, make it a point to start with tougher tasks. Getting those more challenging projects out of the way first thing in the morning is recommended because it’s when you have the most amount of energy, as opposed to later in the day when mentally drained.

10. Being complacent.

Getting stuck in your comfort zone prevents you from experiencing and doing more with your life or business. It also prevents you from networking, testing new ideas, or learning new skills that can make you a more well-rounded individual.

Don’t settle. Keep pushing yourself forward and always demand more of yourself. In other words, go big, or go home.

1. Sir Richard Branson - Get Up Early

He adds, “No matter where I am in the world, I try to routinely wake up at around 5am. By rising early, I’m able to do some exercise and spend time with my family, which puts me in a great mind frame before getting down to business.”

2. Mark Zuckerberg - Make as Few Decisions as Possible

Did you ever wonder why the Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to often be wearing the same clothes? "I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community," Zuckerberg told his audience during a 2014 public Q&A. He added, “I'm in this really lucky position, where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than a billion people. And I feel like I'm not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life.”

Dorsey also said that he gets the most out of his day by sleeping between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and then meditating and exercising.

Dorsey also has mentioned that he tries to keep a fairly exact routine to keep himself consistent. He feels this has continued to help him through the years.

6. Arianna Huffington - Get Enough Sleep First

“I could not live without a good night’s sleep—because for the longest time I did live without it and paid a very high price,” Huffington says. However, once she is awake, her schedule could vary. For example, what time she wakes-up could differ based on whether she’s going to the office or airport.

For most mornings, Huffington rides an exercise bike for 30 minutes, meditates for another 30, takes a shower, gets dressed, and has a cup of coffee.

7. Elon Musk - Make Time for the Small Things

Musk has claimed that he works an insane 80-100 hours per week! But, that doesn’t prevent him from waking up at 7am to catch a spectacular view outside of his L.A. area home. Musk normally skips breakfast, but sometimes has an omelette or cup of coffee, and arrives at his SpaceX office before 10am. Once in the office, he makes his morning phone calls to journalists, job candidates, and conference calls regarding either SpaceX or Tesla.

Self-help guru and author of the 4-Hour Workweek has a five-step morning ritual that helps him stay on top of his game. This includes;

  • Making your bed - it’s a little action that puts you in control and makes you proud.
  • Meditate.
  • Hang. Yes, hang so that you can decompress your spine.
  • Drink tea.
  • Write in a journal.

After completing these five tasks, Tim is ready to start his day and start helping others improve their lives.

9. Jeff Bezos - Avoid Early Morning Meetings

Instead of rushing to the office, the Amazon founder prefers to have a leisurely breakfast with his wife and children. "I wanted her to get the best hours of my day," Bezos has said. That’s why Bezos made it a point to not plan any early-morning meetings. This not only keeps a healthy work-life balance, it also ensures that you get a full night’s rest and decreases stress.

10. Dave Gilboa - Get the Blood Flowing

Gilboa, founder of the eyewear company Warby Parker, admits that he’s not exactly a morning person. "I'm usually a little groggy in the morning, but I find that anytime I exercise to get the blood flowing, I have more energy throughout the day. So I've been riding my bike to work, even in the winter."

10 Things You Must Check Off When Hiring A Lead Generation Representative

Regardless of your business, how do you attract and convert strangers who will gain an interest in your organization? It could be through content, a promotion, cold-calling, or retargeting. While all of these methods are effective, they can’t be achieved with the a lead generation representative running the show.

But, simply hiring someone to send out emails, write content, or speak at industry events is no easy task. It takes someone special to not only draw prospects to your business, but stay with them and continue to groom them during the entire customer journey. That’s why, when hiring a lead generation rep, you need to address the following ten items:

1. Know Your Sales Funnel

Since Lead generation sits atop your sales funnel, it only makes sense that this is your starting point when hiring a lead generation rep. Samuel Woods explains while writing for Stimulead that you need to understand your sales pipeline goals by examining “the amount of potential money you can see coming in based on things like sales calls, appointments, opportunities, deal size, and conversion.” If you already have a sales team in place then they should be able to provide you with this information. If you don’t have a sales team you can review your current analytics reports or scope out industry benchmarks.

The reason that your sales funnel will impart your lead generation hiring decision is that it provides data like how many leads you have, how many leads are converting into prospects, and then the amount that becomes paying customers. Besides showing you whether or not you’ve met your goals, it also shows how much revenue (ROI) you’re bringing in. If you’re revenue is too low, you may have to wait on hiring that rep until it grows.

2. Is It the Right Time?

After reviewing your sale funnel, Woods recommends that you determine whether or not it’s the right time to bring a lead rep on-board. He says, “qualified leads just don’t pop out of thin air (as much as we’d like them to), it takes time to not only find find those leads, but also hire the right people and train them, especially if your business is starting from scratch.”

To help figure this out, you should consider the following;

  • The hiring process may take a month or two before finding the right rep.
  • It will probably take another month or two to get the new hire situated.
  • It will also take time to generate leads.
  • There’s also the sales cycle to consider, such as how long will it take a prospect to become a client.

Woods also points out that a “new team member starting from the beginning of the hiring process could take six months to a year before they are consistently making revenue for you through the process.” If your sales projections are off, you’re probably not going to be pleased with the results.

3. Answer Critical Marketing Questions

Besides examining your sales funnel and timing, Genia Stephens from Business 2 Community recommends that you also answer the following critical marketing questions before hiring a lead generation rep;

  • Do you know how to effectively reach your target audience?
  • What performance indicators are you using to measure your success?
  • Is your content relevant, informative, and intelligent?
  • Do you have a clear and precise call-to-action?
  • What strategy has previously worked for you when nurturing leads?

This isn’t an extensive list of questions that you should be asking yourself, but they can at least can steer you in the right direction so that you can find a rep that aligns with your plans.

4. Write Out a Job Description

The responsibilities of a lead rep will vary from company to company. For example, do you require a rep that’s going to bring-in leads at events or creating content or do you need a closer after a potential customer fills out a form?

Know what type of rep you’re looking for and then start writing down what they’re expected to do, who they’ll be working with, and what type of experience they’ll need to posses before conducting your search.

5. Know Where You’re Recruiting

When you know that you know what type of rep you’re looking for, it’s time to start recruiting. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Hiring the wrong rep can be costly, so you want to make sure that you find the best candidate possible.

LinkedIn is one of the best places to start your search since it’s such a powerful, and large networking site. However, don’t rule out sites like Monster, Indeed, and Glassdoor. You can also ask for referrals from your existing network.

Whether your search is online or in-person, keep an eye for individuals who have drive. You can spot these trait in candidates who are achievers, competitive, and optimistic.

6. Do You Prefer Skills or Experience?

One of the toughest questions that you’ll face during the hiring process is whether or not you prefer a rep who has experience or not. Diane Helbig from Clarity of Course Sales Training says, “If they are a good salesperson, they can learn [the industry] and the value of your product or service. If they are new to sales, consider providing sales training to set them up for success.”

However, if you’re involved in a complex industry you may be better off hiring a rep who is familiar with the industry since they’ll be able to quickly learn your specific business, as opposed to someone who needs to spend months learning the ins-and-outs of your entire industry.

7. Determine Compensation

Anne Seley raises an excelling point for OpenView Labs;

“When expansion-stage companies build their first lead generation teams, all too often they focus on establishing the right roles, responsibilities, strategies, and processes, only to neglect or glaze over a critical driver of both short- and long-term lead generation success: compensation structure.”

To help solve this problem, Anne came up with the following five tips when determining compensation for a lead generation rep;

  • Have the right balance between base salary and bonuses, such as 60 percent salary and 40 percent bonus structure.
  • Use the right metrics, like the ability to bring-in sales qualified leads, to determine bonuses.
  • Don’t base compensation on factors that are out of the reps control.
  • Pay commissions and bonuses as frequently as possible.
  • Provide your reps with smaller rewards as well, like a weekly award or a vacation.

8. Are They Passionate?

Passion is what ultimately drives and motivates lead generation reps. They could have a decade of experience, but if they’re lacking passion you can be certain that they’ll have trouble bringing in or closing sales when times get rough.

When you’ve narrowed down your list of potential reps, and you’ve moved on to interviews, have discussions with the candidate to determine whether or not they have that spark. If they’re passionate, you’ll have no problem picking it up because you’ll see in their eyes and hear it in their voice.

9. Can They Write Well?

Lead generation reps must possess a wide range of skills that can attract and hook potential customers to your business. One of these skills that can easily get overlooked is the ability to write killer content. Whether it’s a newsletter, email, social media post, or article on your company’s blog, your rep should be an incredible writer that can keep your customers to generate, and maintain, leads.

10. Are They Active Listeners?

Finally, your rep has to be able to listen to the pain points of your customers so that they share the reasons why your business can help enhance the customers' lives. Your lead generation rep should be active listeners who truly understand what a customer means, doesn't get defensive, and spends the adequate amount of time to get to the root of the problem.

10 Tips to Get Along Better With Your Nasty Boss

Over the years, I've worked with some pretty crappy bosses. In a perfect world, we would all have a boss or manager that made us feel valuable, encouraged us in our work and helped us to be more innovative. Then, at the end of long day, the entire team would go out and celebrate our accomplishments - on the boss’s dime, of course.

However, we don’t live in a perfect world though, and we’ve all had the unpleasant experience of working for someone who is just downright nasty.

Hopefully you love your job because if you don't, most of these tips won't help. If you do love your job and want to make this job work, here are 10 tips in getting along with this nasty boss.

1. Know Who You’re Dealing With

I've seen all types of bosses over the year that I could classify as nasty. Some are annoying because of the habits they have while others are toxic or like to scream at their staff. Some situations related to stress while others just seemed like they liked to be nasty. It was important to figure out what I was dealing with in terms of their personality and the reason they were that way so I could get a handle on it.

Some patterns that determine which type of boss you’re working with include:

  • The micromanager is anxious and wants be hands on with everything. You can make them feel more comfortable by being transparent and addressing any concerns in advance.
  • The procrastinator is afraid of making the wrong decision and waits until the last minute. Try setting up a timeline and initiate the first steps of a project.
  • The idiot isn’t familiar with the business or industry. Approach your boss with information, but don’t be condescending.
  • The dictator runs the show in an authoritative style. Ask them if they’re open to listening to your suggestions. If not, shut-up and don't press it.
  • The abuser is known for screaming and yelling, but can be rational. Wait and talk with them when they’re calm. However, truly abusive bosses are toxic. So, it may be in your best interest to start looking for a new job.
  • The non-communicator never says what they really want or expect, yet have plenty of blame if something isn't done. Try asking for a short 20 minute meeting or phone call, once a week catch up and make sure that you are both on the same page.

Kevin Kruse, in a Fast Company, noted that it's a good idea to observe your boss and assess what they do. I have found that this helped me get an idea of the type of person they were and why they might be behaving a certain way, which then helped me deal with it better than if I hadn't considered these factors.

2. Avoid Confrontation

You may not agree with the actions or behavior of your boss. However, they’re still your superior and you must respect their position. Show-up and do what you were hired to do in the first place. Remember, this is a professional setting and that means it’s no place for having a showdown and especially not in front of your colleagues.

At the end of the day, however, you can vent to your spouse or friends or blow-off some steam by exercising. If you can’t wait until then, there are some quick exercises that you can do in your office. I've done all of these and it has helped me not to lose my cool in front of a boss that was horrible.

3. Don’t Cave

However, that doesn’t mean that you should completely cave-in to your nasty boss. Don't be a doormat because this will  decrease your creativity, motivation, and career advancement. You will also start hating yourself for being a "yes" person when all you want to do is say "no."  When standing up for yourself, you should be assertive, state the facts, and specifically identify what needs to change.

I wanted to do what I was supposed to for my boss, but I drew the line when they became unreasonable or it ate into my personal time.  By standing up for myself, I gained confidence and my boss didn't pressure me as much.

4. Have an Action Plan Ready

If you’re aware of your boss’s behavior, then you should be able to anticipate their actions and have a plan to handle them. It's a good idea to have notes and prepare certain responses. I would note down those things I felt were not motivating or where it seemed like my boss just shot me down. This helped me to reflect on these and then have a response that was appropriate in case they would do it again -- and they did do it again. When they did, I was ready with a response that was firm but not disrespectful.

Additionally, you should have a plan in case it still doesn't work. There were some bosses that responded positively when I interjected with my planned responses. Other times, though, it didn't go well, so I had to be prepared for that as well. I would have responses that acknowledged that they didn't like me speaking up so I could diffuse the situation. It is important to get your point across, but if it's not working, it's time to move on to ensuring it stays calm.

5. Document Everything

I kept notes about everything and asks that my boss give me requests in writing. This paper trail not only ensured I knew exactly what I was doing and had that in case my boss turned around and accused me of anything, but it was also important in case things ever get worse and I would have to prove that certain situations occurred. It is a good safety net to have and provides a way to keep communication open with your boss no matter how they act.

6. Go the Extra Mile

It’s tough to stay motivated and want to give it 110% when working under a difficult boss. The thing is, if you go above and beyond you’ll stand out among your colleagues. And, you’ll also be better able to help prove to upper management or ownership that you’re a valuable member of the team. Even though you may have a boss that may argue otherwise, it’s hard to dispute the facts. Let your work speak for itself and don't let your boss get in your way.

I've always been very committed to working hard so when I have had a difficult boss, it only makes me work harder. Sometimes, what you may take as someone being nasty is just a person that is trying to get you to reach your true potential. It's tough love, and I see its value in certain situations.

7. Set Boundaries

Put boundaries up so  that people do not affect you as much as they are trying to do. You control the effect they have on you, so you can choose to separate yourself from it so that it doesn't impact your work and motivation. You can be like other successful people how have set boundaries by identifying  your limits, paying attention to your feeling, not being afraid to establish boundaries and being aware of your environment.

8. Don’t Go Over Your Boss’s Head

Even if you are frustrated and feel like you have had enough to the point where you think that it’s time to present your case to their superiors, you might want to still stop and think about it. Unfortunately, that’s not always the best course of action since it’s a surefire way of causing a rift between you and your boss.

Unless you evidence that your boss is doing something illegal, going to superiors with allocations isn’t going to lead to them letting your boss go. Instead, it may end up halting your career advancement if you end up earning a reputation as a complainer.

9. Optimize Communication

Communication is one of the most effective ways in handling workplace confrontation and addressing any issues. However, you don’t want to wait for your boss to make the first move. Initiate the conversation and schedule a meeting with them so that you can tackle these problems one-on-one. I have always done this because I want to make sure I understand the other person. One of the tricks that has worked for me is to repeat back what they've said and then ask them if that's what they mean. This has cleared up many misunderstandings and stopped a difficult situation from getting any worse. And, in some instances, has removed the awkwardness from the relationship with my boss.

10. Share Accountability

Rather than assuming my boss had all the power and control, I looked at our relationship as one of shared accountability. This meant that we were in it together and should talk about issues, performance, and working roles rather than assuming one has all the power and responsibility. Here are some examples of how you could approach shared accountability with your boss.

  • "One area that I still struggle with is month-end reporting. I’m trying my best but I think if I could get the XYZ report earlier it would help me to produce a quality report in less time. Do you think I could get that document earlier?"
  • "I just wanted to follow up on that item that came up a couple months ago. As we had discussed, I’d be much more efficient with that widget for my computer. Did that request ever go in…have you heard anything about it? I don’t mind following up on it myself…want me to call David for the request?"
  • "I know the Diamond Project is very important and you want to make sure it’s done right, but the detailed nature of your instructions and questions makes me think you might not have confidence in me. Can I confirm the end result you’re looking for and maybe let’s see if I can run with it on my own for a few days? I’ll definitely shout for help when I need it."

Be Patient

Lastly, be patient as each nasty boss will be different and will require a different approach. It may take some time for these tips to sink in. I had to use different combinations of these tactics and put in different levels of effort with each boss where we butted heads. However, in the long run, it paid off to be patient and keep trying various tactics to alleviate the tension and stress of having a difficult boss.

You’d be lying to yourself if you didn’t want to have your dream job. After all, we’re going to spend 90,000 hours at work. So, wouldn’t you want to spend that time doing something that you love?

That’s always easier said than done, but you can make the working process easier by following these ten tips to land the job of your dreams.

1. Conduct a Self-Exploration

“The first step, which far too many people overlook, is to conduct a self-exploration and identify possible careers that truly inspire,” writes Kent Lewis. “Brainstorm, organize and filter dream jobs based on level of inspiration, barriers to entry (i.e. level of education or certification fees) and earning potential.”

Lewis adds, “After a fairly comprehensive review session, you should be able to hone in on a few front-runners.”

2. Apply for Jobs That Aren’t Listed

David Williams asks in Forbes, “How many times have we interviewed for a job we knew was not right for us and yet we were still devastated when we weren’t called back for the next round?” Instead of applying for jobs that you’re probably not interested in anyway, “Become friends with people who work in companies you’re interested in.”

Learn everything you can about them and how you can support them. Williams is confident that they will “call you up and ask you to join them when a new position opens up or refer you to an open position at another great company.”

Remember, nothing beats networking. So make sure that you brush-up on your networking skills and build strong networking communities.

3. Pretend You Already Have the Job

"See yourself as already ​in the dream job,"Katharine Brooks, executive director of personal and career development at Wake Forest University, tells TODAY.com. “Weave in background and training of your past experience but use the vocabulary associated with the new role where you see yourself belonging."

You can do this while writing your cover letter to prove that you’re “the one.”

4. Be Flexible

Here’s something that you may not have considered, your dream job may not even exist yet. It may not even exist for another couple of years. That’s why Erika Fry recommends in Fortune that “You’ve got to be open to whatever industry change comes your way.” Fry adds, “And recruiters will reward you for it: ‘Comfort with ambiguity’ is among the most sought-after qualities in job candidates today.”

5. Sell Yourself

Why wait for a job opening of a referral when you could have employers come to you? Promoting yourself online is fairly easy, and inexpensive today. For example, you could start your own blog and have an amazing LinkedIn profile.

You could also step-up your game so that you’ll really get noticed.

Kim Ashdown, founder of InternUtopia.com, wanted to secure an internship with Katalyst, Ashton Kutcher's media company. According to Investopedia, Ashdown launched iwannaworkatkatalyst.com, “created videos explaining why she wants to work there and even sent cupcakes to the office.” She also purchased ad space on Google and Facebook.

6. Create an Online Mind Map of Ideas

“Employers are impressed by candidates who not only know their company inside and out, but also have ideas to bring to the table,” says Ron Stewart in a guest post for Ladders. “Don’t be afraid to make suggestions and show how passionate you are about moving forward with the company.”

Stewart suggests that you, “Jot down all of your best ideas, strategies and thoughts. Consolidate these on to an online mind map or infographic, so that they are easy to read and eye catching” by using tools like Popplet or Coggle.

7. Volunteer

It’s no secret that employers value candidates who volunteer, but Ella Fertitta adds on the Hands On Network that “volunteering will allow you to access meaningful work without the pressure of being evaluated on your performance.” Volunteering also gives you the chance to develop new skills, build meaningful relationships, strengthen your leadership skills, and broaden your horizons.

8. Update Your Skill Set

Author Stan Popovich writes in Entrepreneur that you should “Get into the habit of updating your skills, even during a long job search.” For example, if you learn the latest programming software, you’ll be current and more valuable in the market. “Continuous education could be the key to getting that job that you want. There's always something to learn.”

9. Perfect Your Elevator Pitch

You never know when you’ll run into a employer or be called-in for an interview. That means that you should have already created your elevator pitch and know it front-to-back. Ramit Sethi writes that the benefits of this is that it will make you more memorable and referable.

Robert Pagliarini, former CEO of SeekingCapital.com, recommends on Business Know How that elevator pitches should contain a hook, passion, and a request.

10. Create the Job Yourself

"Sometimes, the best way to land the job of your dreams is to try to create it right where you are” Michele Mavi, director of internal recruiting and content development at Atrium Staffing, tells Business News Daily. “Take on passion projects at your current place of employment; find ways to learn new skills to incorporate into your work.”

By doing so, others will begin to take notice, which is when you start sharing your vision. “Once you get the ear of top-level management, start to share your vision of how you see your career developing within the organization. They just might listen and give you the chance to go after your dream."

And, if that doesn’t happen, you can always start your own business where you have control on whether or not you’ll land your dream job.

The campaign relied on both Facebook ads and posts to spread the word and generate buzz.

2. Urban Decay: Coachella-Meets-Cosmetics Contest

In February and March 2014 cosmetics company Urban Decay unveiled a new collection entitled Electric. To get fans excited, the company ran a contest where they could win tickets to the sold-out music festival Coachella. To enter, people had to first follow Urban Decay on Pinterest and a pinboard called “Get Electric with UD” where they would show what they would wear at the annual music festival.

3. Land Rover UK: #Hibernot

#Hibernot is a cross-channel campaign that uses social, video and experiential marketing. The idea behind the campaign is that since there isn’t much daylight during the winter, you have to take advantage of the day as much as possible. Land Rover uses YouTube videos, billboards, and photography from Instagram influencers to show you how to enjoy the outdoors during the winter.

4. eBags: #TravelTipTuesdays

eBags is a travel bag manufacturer that uses its Facebook page to showcase their latest products and offer followers discount codes. However, the coolest use of Facebook is sharing priceless travel tips every Tuesday on everything from packing, travel hygiene, and even juicy facts like some airline credit cards allowing you to check bags for free.

5. Four Seasons LinkedIn Page

Four Seasons has been listed as one of LinkedIn’s top company pages in years like 2013. And, it’s easy to see why. The hotel and resort posts videos and readable that highlight employees, how the company gives back to the community, and employees having fun. It’s an effective way to use social media to recruit talent without seeming overly pushy.

8. Droptheweapons.og: A Different Ending

This social campaign created an invertive choose your own adventure on YouTube to help end violence. It’s powerful message that gives viewers a first person experience on the impact that their decisions can have.

9. Victoria’s Secret: #DIY Panty Contest

Victoria’s Secret is a brand known for using Snapchat to host giveaways. One example was the #DIY Panty Contest for Valentine’s Day 2016. Fans had a chance to win one of its personalized panty kits by drawing over a screenshot of their favorite pair and then send the image back to Victoria’s Secret with the hashtag #DIYPantyContest.

10. Make-A-Wish Foundation & Disney: #ShareYourEars

Disney partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation where people were asked to share images of them wearing Mickey Mouse Ears on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ShareYourEars. For every “ear” photo Disney would donate $5 to Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International.


Believe it or not, General Electric is constantly up-to-date on the latest social media trends and channels. In 2015 they were one of the first brands to use Periscope in a marketing campaign. As explained in Co.Create, “the project will allow viewers to criss-cross the U.S. via Periscope and get a drone's eye view of some of the company's least accessible facilities where jet engines, locomotives, wind turbines and industrial machinery are made and tested to extremes, featuring interviews and expert commentary from GE scientists and technologists. One of my favorite things about the summer is sitting by the pool or relaxing on a beach with a really good read. But, if you’re like me, you also want to take that opportunity to actually learn something new as you’re soaking up the sun.

This year I’ve decided to work on becoming stronger with personal finances. As I run a fintech company I should really know how to best answer all my customers questions, no matter what they are. I’ve settled on the following eleven books to help me achieve that goal.

1. The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

Millions of investors have read and been inspired by this classic book since its release in 1926. Even though this bestseller shares financial advice through a collection of parables set in in ancient Babylon it also emphasize the importance of being charitable.

Quote to live by: “Wealth, like a tree, grows from a tiny seed. The first copper you save is the seed from which your tree of wealth shall grow. The sooner you plant that seed the sooner shall the tree grow. And the more faithfully you nourish and water that tree with consistent savings, the sooner may you bask in contentment beneath its shade.”

2. The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko

Published in 1996 The Millionaire Next Door is a compilation of research conducted by Stanley and Danko that profiles the behavior habits of millionaires. It’s a great summer read if you’re just getting introduced to the world of personal finance since it includes easy-to-understand instructions on how to behave more like a millionaire.

Will it asks important financial questions like ‘Why don’t flight attendants get tipped?, ‘Why does KFC always run out of fried chicken,?’ and ‘When to rob a bank?’

6. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

It’s a great selection for newbies, thanks to the glossary, and the irreverent tone makes it perfect for reading while on the beach.

An easy-to-read and interesting book that explores why we’re so obsessed with retirement and how much money it would take for us to leave our jobs. Ultimately, it’s guide that addresses our hopes and fears about the future and how we can plan for a secure future.
