7 Ways to Avoid Burnout as an Entrepreneur

7 Ways to Avoid Burnout as an Entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur has a long list of advantages. When you swap the lifestyle that comes with having a traditional job for the lifestyle that comes with building your own business, you get to leave a lot of unnecessary baggage behind.

But unfortunately, stress isn’t so easy to ditch.

As rewarding as it is to build your own brand, the reality of burning out is extremely real. Here’s how to take preemptive action to avoid burning yourself out.

1. Take Regular Breaks

We associate breaks with slacking, when in fact, taking breaks from work is scientifically proven to improve productivity.

Sure, you should push yourself to work as hard as you can, but becoming extreme in this regard isn’t going to help you in the long run – on the contrary, it’s the fastest way to burn yourself out.

So, stop feeling so guilty about those Netflix sessions, and give yourself a break.

2. Switch Up Your Environment

If you’re working from the same spot week in, week out, are you really taking advantage of the entrepreneurial lifestyle?

Switch it up by working at coffee shops, libraries, airports, and anywhere else with free wifi and a comfy chair.

This practise will get you out of your comfort zone, provide you with opportunities to network, and it will also help you to avoid the entrepreneurship blues.

3. Take a Vacation

This one needs no real explanation. If you’re feeling stressed out, it may be time to book a plane ticket or two.

Oh, and be sure to actually relax on your vacation. Your hotel room may have free wifi, but that doesn’t mean you have to use it to work.

4. De-clutter Your Life

Life has a way of cluttering itself up. Your desk is full, your mind is multi-tasking, your bedroom is a mess (well, mine is), and your social life could probably use some work, too.

Your life’s clutter will filter all the way down to how you work on a daily basis, too. Your schedule and sleeping pattern are usually the first two areas of your life to suffer.

Now, de-cluttering your life is no simple task, but we’ve got a solid guide on how to do it anyway.

5. Stop Multitasking

You might think of multitasking as a desirable skill, but it’s actually a practise that flies in the face of productivity. Hear me out here.

When you multitask, you are not putting all of your focus into one task. Your brain skips from one task to another, forcing it to pause and re-think its approach more times than it needs to.

To keep your brain fresh and focused for longer, finish one task before moving on to the next one.

6. Improve Your Diet

A good diet will help ward off burn out by fuelling your body properly. A bad diet will make you feel groggy on a regular basis – and that’s a recipe for disaster when your business needs you to be on top of your game every day.

Our article on how to eat better as an entrepreneur will help you to get your diet on track.

7. Exercise

A healthy diet is a great start, but you need to partner it with a study exercise regime in order to really distance yourself from burnout.

Not only has staying active has been proven to increase brain functionality, but it’s also a great way to socialise (and even network) with a wider range of people.

Stay Cool

You became an entrepreneur to take on the world the way you want to take it on, so do yourself a favour and start living in a way that preserves your mind and body.

Stressing too much will do precisely the opposite. Work hard when it’s time to work hard, but when it's time for relaxation, don't hold back.
